Programme Manager - Job Description
The Programme Manager will be in charge of delivering the pilot Creative Industries Pathways programme, which will run for up to 25 participants.
Duties will include:
- Setting up marketing programme and recruiting 25 participants (working alongside Icon Theatre’s General Manager)
- Setting up 2 day training courses in IT and a range of creative industries skills (eg web design, technical music production etc)
- Researching and find a 2 weeks work experience placement for each candidate
- Developing a Personal Progression Plan for each candidate and help them to progress through it, delivered through 6 hours of one-to-one support
- Completing evaluation forms and reporting back on the progress of the programme to the General Manager.
This is a freelance position with a total fee of £4,000 and we expect the project will be delivered through approximately 325 hours. Hours and place of work are flexible, though direct contact time with candidates will need to take place at the Brook Theatre in Chatham (Medway). The project needs to be completed and evaluation fedback to the General Manager by July 2010.
Desirable skills and experience
- experience of one-to-one support/ mentoring work with excluded/ disadvantaged clients
- understanding of the creative industries
- experience of direct contact/ outreach work with NEETs
- knowledge of BME communities and representative organisations based in Medway
- good organisational and time management skills

Creative Industries Pathway Programme
The Pathways programme is designed to support routes into employment within the creative industries, a sector which is set to expand by 36% in the South East over the next five years (SEEDA, 2006). Work experience and training is specifically targetted to meet specific skills shortages identified in Creative Blueprint England (Creative and Cultural Skills, 2008).
This is a pilot project targetting participants from ethnic minority communities not in employment, education or training.
The Programme will be run by a Programme Manager, who will provide participants with one-to-one support throughout the course.
For each participant, the Pathways programme will provide:
- two training days in Microsoft Office and IT
- two training days from a selection of creative industry ‘taster’ courses, including:
– technical music production
– graphic/web design
– technical film production
– technical theatre
– management and administration of creative businesses
- two weeks work experience in each participant’s creative industry of choice
- development and implementation of a Personal Progression Plan (PPP)
- individual follow up support, assisting with further research into training/ career development, applications/ funding opportunities for further study, CV creation, job application and interview techniques.
As a result of this programme, we aim for participants to have:
- contacts and informal networks in the creative industry of their choice
- understanding of what specific jobs are like in practice
- understanding of the key skills/ qualifications needed for entry level employment
- completed a Personal Progression Plan (detailing their employment goal and the steps needed to attain it) and achieved at least two progression steps. The partricpant will have a good understanding of how to achieve the remaining progression steps.
In addition if further study is required before entry level employment can be achieved, at least two applications will have been completed for entry onto courses for further study, and for any funds available complete the course
If the participant is ready to progress immediately to entry level employment, a CV will have been compiled, guidance will have been given about how and where to research vacancies, and interview techniques will have been role-played. Supported applications for at least two vacancies will have been completed.
Icon Theatre
We aim to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people and communities through the performing arts. As well as national touring productions, we run projects on housing estates, classes in community centres and issue based workshops for youth clubs and drop-in centres. Most of our participants are from minority ethnic backgrounds, and many are not in education, employment or training (NEETS).
